「ある少女の夢」
「あたしね、変な夢を見たの」
「だからどんな夢よ？」
雪美はいたずらっぽく笑ってわざと焦らしてみた。裕子のまん丸で栗色の瞳を見ていると、ついついそうしたくなってしまうのだ。別に意地悪をしているのではなくて、彼女の膨れた顔が妙にいとおしく思えてしょうがなかったのだ。決して変な意味ではなく。
「もう、もったいつけないで」
裕子の眉間に微かなしわが寄った。
「どれ、簡単に説明するとしましょうか。記憶は若干あやふやだけど、まずあたしは電車に揺られて窓の景色を眺めていたの。よくわからないけど、それは新幹線だったと思う。でもスピードはずっと通勤電車並で外の景色をゆっくり眺めることができたの。これって何だか面白くない？ それでいて疑問や違和感なんて毛ほども湧き上がってこないんだから」
「なるほど、非常識な新幹線ね。まあ、夢ではよくありがちかもしれないけど。それでどんな景色だったの？ 雪美ひとりだけ？」
まるで尋問するかのように、裕子は言葉を並べた。
「あたしだけ、あとは赤の他人様。景色はねえ、小川が流れていたかな、それに森林がたくさんあって箱根か伊豆の風景によく似ていた気がした」
雪美は目だけを上に向けながら答えた。
「なんだ、意外にのんびりしてて楽しそうな夢じゃない」
「ここまではね。ところがしばらくのろい新幹線のシートにもたれ掛かっていると、いつの間にかハイキングコースのような小道を歩いているから驚いたよ。けど、夢のなかのあたしは何事もなかったみたいに平然と歩いてるんだけどね」
「あるある、で？」
「あたしは左右の木々を眺めながらひたすら歩いていくの。時たまお堂とか、古びた旅館みたいなものが目に映ったよ。空気はひんやりしてるけど悪い気分じゃなかった。しばらくして雑草の生えた地面に異質な気配を感じて、よく見たら……鳥」
「鳥？ どういうことよ」
ふたりはお互いに見つめ合い、スプーンの動きが停止した。
「つまり、カナリヤとかボタンインコとか、でかい雀もいたかな。そいつらがあたしと同じ方向にペタペタと突き進んでるんだよ、せっせとね。ピクニック仲間じゃあるまいし」
「どうして飛ばないの？」
裕子の顔の筋肉は、明らかに笑いを堪えるために努力しているように見えた。おそらく彼女は、あたしが話した滑稽な光景をありありと想像しているのだろう、と雪美は推測した。
「鳥に聞いてよ」

「あたしと鳥たちがせっせと歩き続けていくと、道が徐々に上がり坂になっていくの、でも夢だから足はほとんど疲労を感じない。便利なものだよね。やがて視界がひらけてきて、明るい原っぱがあたしたちを出迎えてくれた。鳥の数も最初は三、四羽だったのに、その頃には十倍ぐらいまで増えてたかな。で、よくみると、目の前には立派な教会が建っているのに気が付いたの。形はうまく思い出せないけど、とにかく屋根は深みのあるブルーだったことだけ憶えてる。そう、ネイビーってやつに近いかな」
すでに裕子の笑いの渦は過ぎ去り、両手を頬にあてて真剣な眼差しで相槌を打っている。彼女は心の切り替えが早い。
「あたしたち、つまりあたしと鳥たちは、当然のように教会のなかへ入っていったの。朝起きたら何のためらいもなく携帯チェックするみたいにね。そのままあたしは、まえから二番目の席に腰を下ろしてその不条理な建物の内部を見渡してた。かなり簡素で、ごてごてしたものはほとんどなかったけど、高いところの窓ガラスからはいい具合に日差しが入り込んできて、とても清潔な感じを受けたの。前方の古風な教壇はピカピカに磨かれていて、その奥の祭壇も綺麗だった。でも十字架や石像のようなものは記憶にないけど、とにかく綺麗で荘厳な印象を受けたの」
言い終わると、紅茶を一口飲んだ。
「十字架もない、天使や聖者の像もなかった。それでどうして教会だってわかったの？」
「知らないよ、今思い出しても教会ってイメージがこびりついて取れないし、少なくとも、県民ホールや、塾の雰囲気ではなかったから」
